Seiko, Sportsmatic Sea horse 1964 Vintage Watch, 6601-69999, Overhauled, G/teed

A beautifull and rare example of this 1964, Seiko Sea horse Sportsmatic. This is a great example of an important model in horological history. There is some damage to the dial near the Seiko logo and on the chapter ring the etching on the caseback is quite worn making the markings hard to read.

The hands are superbly finished to the standard that Seiko has became renown for. The glass is new, perspex, nicely polished with some hard to photograph fractures at about 8 o'clock. The 6601 automatic wind movement is one of the engineering marvels that helped create the reputation for excellence that Seiko is enjoying to this day.

It has been professionally overhauled/serviced and I confidently guarantee it for 90 days. This Seiko Sea horse Sportsmatic represents an important chapter in horological history and is definitely a watch for the serious collector. So I have started adding a photo of the movement, disassembled ready to go through the cleaning machine. All old dried up lubricants and anything else that shouldn't be there is cleaned away. Then, it is reassembled, lubricated, adjustments made and regulated.

Water resistance and accidental damage is not guaranteed. A vintage mechanical watch will not perform like a modern quartz (electronic) watch. It is not ideal as a daily wearer. It should be treated for what it is, something old, classical and special. Treat it as you would a vintage car - not ideal to use as a "daily driver". Keep it in the condition at which you bought it and it will hold or, indeed, increase its value. Use it every day and it will go backwards. I finished my apprenticeship in 1973 having completed technical training at the RMIT, Melbourne. In the early 80s I went into retail (jewellery and watches). About 25 years ago I realised that the watches that once were common had become rare and I began to appreciate their beauty both in style and mechanically. That's when I started collecting classics.
