9ct Gold Cyma Wristwatch Horse Racing Medal. Cumberland Plate, Carlisle 1953
Rare 9ct gold vintage Cyma gentleman's wristwatch from the early 1950s presented as a horse racing trophy prize in 1953, most probably to the jockey, Joe Sime by racehorse owner & trainer, Sam Hall. The watch has a manual winding movement and appears in good working order and keeps good time when tested.
It comes complete with a brand new leather strap. The back of the watch is nicely engraved. The 1953 Cumberland Plate took place at Carlisle Racecourse on 2nd July 1953 over 1 &1/2 miles.
The result was as follows. Jockey Joe Sime, Owner & Trainer, Sam Hall. Watch Weight (including strap): 26.3 gm. Diameter of case: 28 mm.
Overall length of watch with strap: 225 mm. I have not removed the back of the case to find out the Reference Number as I did not want to risk scratching the gold.
The watch has however been confirmed as 9ct gold by a qualified jeweller. If anyone has any technical questions regarding the watch please ask and I will try and answer them as best I can.
As with all my items there is a no quibble return if not fully satisfied. Joe Sime: Joe was born on 27th July 1923 in Liverpool and was crowned Champion Apprentice Jockey in 1943, 1944 & 1946. In a career that spanned 29 years from 1941 to 1968, Joe rode 1,420 winners. Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is an interesting item which could still be worn today as a quality, stylish, vintage gold wristwatch with a good story behind it. Most likely presented to Jockey, Joe Sime for winning the prestigious Cumberland Plate at Carlisle in 1953, it is a nice piece of horse racing history.
